Lithuania will host the third Thematic Workshop of 2013

After the announcment that the first two Thematic Workshops of the year, one about segregation and one about transitions, will be done the day before the second general meeting in The Hague, we are pleased to announce that the third one, about comprehensive language support strategies, will take place in Vilnius, Lithuania. The partners in charge of organise it are Public Policy Managment Institute and the Lithuanian Ministry of Education.

This event is scheduled for 21st and 22nd November 2013 and the objectives are to:

  •  Discuss the state-of-art of host language/mother tongue acquisition approaches in Europe
  • Clarify the role of various stakeholders in language support policies
  • Establish best practices and universal approaches in providing teaching of languages of the host country and respecting the languages of the country of origin
  • Assess possibilities of their transferability to different countries

First day (Nov 21)

9.00 – 11.30 Introduction of Sirius and field visit to Naujamescio secondary school
  Naujamescio secondary school is a Russian minority school which implements the state programme of bilingual education. During visit to the school the participants will get to know the school and teachers’ language instruction experience through interactive presentation and will be introduced to the school’s practices and challenges in accommodating children’s language needs.
11.30 – 12.00 Travel to the workshop venue (Congress room, Ministry of Education and Science)
12.00 – 13.00 Lunch
13.00 – 13.10 Welcoming speech by Ministry chancellor
13.10 – 13.30 Keynote speech “Importance of language diversity and language support to immigrant children in European schools” (presentation by Dr Jana Huttova)
13.30 – 14.30 Round table “Messages on different countries’ experiences of language support” (examples from Lithuania, Latvia, Spain, Ireland, Norway (tbc)
14.30 – 14.45 Coffee break
14.45 – 16.00 Discussion “Multi-faced approach to language support and its applicability in different countries”Participants will discuss the perspectives of different stakeholders on language acquisition (government, schools, teachers, communities) and their role in language support policies and will attempt to establish universal approaches to language support and provide recommendations how they can be achieved.
16.00 – 16.30 Concluding remarks
16.30 – 17.30 Vilnius Old Town tour (optional)
